Sing Them over Again to Me – Goshen Gospel Favorites

Last Sunday evening, May 8, the Sojourners Sunday school class of Prairie Street Mennonite Church hosted a hymn sing using the (new to us) hymnal Sing Them over Again to Me – Goshen Gospel Favorites. If you missed it, are interested in listening in, or were there and want to enjoy some of the music again, check out the video below!

Holy Week Services

Easter inviteThis Sunday, March 20 is Palm Sunday which begins the journey into Holy Week. At Prairie Street MC, we will observe Maundy Thursday at 7:00pm, with foot washing and scripture. Good Friday services will not be held at Prairie Street but we encourage you to find a local service. Easter Sunday begins with fruit and bread at 8:30am. Singing in the sanctuary begins at 9:30am. 10:00am worship service will include communion.

Christmas Celebrations

Advent at Prairie Street Mennonite Church has focused on the theme “Life from the stump”. The visual of an old broken stump with the light of candles has enhanced our Advent worship. You are welcome to join us for worship this Sunday, December 20 at 9:30am as a time to prepare your hearts for Christmas.

On Sunday, December 27, our worship service will be a time of Christmas music celebration, 9:30am.

On Wednesday, December 23 at 7:00pm we will remember Devonte Ray Patrick who was killed in the church parking lot two years ago on December 23. Devonte’s family and church will join with Prairie Street participants to pray, sing and remember others who have been victims of violence in Elkhart.

Christmas Eve service will be at 5:00pm on Thursday, December 24. Join us for song and scripture as we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus.

Other Christmas celebrations that you may want to participate in include:
– Advent Lessons and Carols at St John the Evangelist Episcopal, 7:00pm, Sunday, December 20.
– Christmas Day service at St John the Evangelist Episcopal, 9:00am, Friday, December 25 (several Prairie Street families have the tradition of attending this service).

A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch shall grow out of his roots.
The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him,
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. Isaiah 11:1-2

2015 Visioning Day Retreat

Last Saturday, twenty-three people from Prairie Street gathered at Amigo Centre for our annual Visioning Day.  Pastors, elders, board members, and ministry team members and conveners came together to pray, reflect, share a meal, and listen for God’s call to our congregation.  This past year our congregation spent many months considering internal issues of identity, hospitality, and belonging.  How now do we shift our focus to include what happens outside these four walls?  How do we share Christ’s love in our community, and invite others to follow Jesus?  The day was rich with thoughts and dreams.  Special thanks to Andrea Baker Dean, for leading us in prayer and scriptural reflection, and Joy Detweiler, who documented our discussions in great detail (and made great cookies!).  I am grateful for ALL those who attended and mindful of the sacrifices of time and travel.  I look forward to sharing information and “draft priorities” for our congregation in the coming weeks.

Sabbatical Groups

Sabbatical Groups will be meeting this summer and fall to provide opportunities for all of us to be refreshed and energized in friendship and faith, to engage in service, and to have fun. To join a group, you can sign up in the Fellowship Hall, contact the group’s animator, or simply show up for the first meeting.

1) Helping Hands | Animator: Carol Honderich | monthly, third Wednesday of each month (next meeting is August 5), 5:30 pm | PSMC Fellowship Hall. Join this group to learn how to quilt or sew, or to find a time, a place, and encouragement to finish a project you’ve already begun. Each meeting begins with a brown bag meal.

2) Exploring the Bible through Drama | Animator: Laura Kraybill | once, Sunday, August 16, 1-3 pm | PSMC Fellowship Hall. This group is for non-actors and actors of all ages and abilities. Laura will lead participants in exploring one or two biblical texts through mime, voice and creative group exercises. Wear clothes that are comfortable to move in. Expect to understand bible stories in new and meaningful ways!

3) Gospel of John Bible Study | Animator: Matt Cordella | weekly, Sunday mornings at 11:15 am (Sunday school time), beginning Sunday, July 26 | PSMC lower level classroom. This group will study the Gospel of John by reading and discussing it together—no other materials are required.

4) Bicycle Adventures | Animator: Nick Bouwman | schedule and location to come. This group will meet to take a few shorter bike rides together and finish with a longer route. Participants will also learn about how to care for our bikes.

5) Faith and Film | Animator: Ross Ringenberg (looking for a co-animator) | monthly, schedule to come | PSMC Sanctuary. This group will meet to watch movies and discuss their meaning in light of our faith. What kind of messages, both explicit and implicit, do we get in films; how does this shape us and our culture; and how do we interpret these things as followers of Jesus? Come discuss!

6) Watershed Exploration | Animator: Josh Kinder
More information to come.

Jubilee House Cleanup

The MVS unit will be welcoming new members at the end of August, and helping hands are needed for a quick sprucing up around Jubilee House. No heavy lifting! Volunteers from both PSMC and FOH will gather on Aug 24 and 25 for two short bursts of cleaning. We’re thinking of one 2-hour block in daytime and one 2-hour block in the evening.
